Sulphuric Acid is a colourless oily liquid with a specific gravity almost twice that of water at 1.84kg/l. At normal temperatures Sulphuric Acid is an odourless solution. Sulphuric Acid has an affinity to water resulting in the evolution of heat when diluted.
Sulphuric Acid is a highly corrosive and reactive chemical. Sulphuric acid can be irritating to the skin, eyes and gastrointestinal tract. Please see the health and safety data sheet attached for further Information.

Sulphuric acid is manufactured in 2 primary ways as a by-product in the pyro-metallurgical smelting and refining of sulphide ores or via the sulphur burning process utilising the contact method.
Both processes convert Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) to Sulphur Trioxide (SO3) and then with the addition of water Sulphuric Acid (H2SO4) is formed. In the case of smelter acid a vigorous cleaning process is carried out on the Sulphur Dioxide gas prior to conversion to Sulphur Trioxide.
Sulphuric Acid’s primary applications are in the following industries
